On our most recent trip to Disneyland, we made dinner reservations at the Carthay Circle Restaurant in California Adventure Land because we wanted preferred viewing for the World of Color water show. The Dining Package is offered through several restaurants and at Carthay Circle, you had to order an entree along with an appetizer or a dessert in order to qualify for the package. We were seated upstairs and lucked out with an unobstructed balcony view of the Toy Story Parade as it marched down Buena Vista Street.
To me, the menu was not very exciting but I figured it was more about getting preferred viewing tickets to the World of Color show than it was about the food. The Firecracker Duck Wings did catch my eye however, because I love Buffalo Wings so this variation to it was very intriguing. For $12, I got 3 duck wings which included the drummer, wing, and wing tip. Although much larger, the duck’s gamier meat didn’t have the same moist flavor of a chicken wing and the spicy sauce didn’t have the tangy flavor of traditional Buffalo Wing sauce that I like. For my entree, I ordered a $41 rib eye with blue cheese that turned out to be too fatty. Having gone to Fleming’s Steak House just a month ago, this steak was no comparison to the $50 bone-in rib eye from Fleming’s.
We headed over to the World of Color show after dinner and did get closer to the water show than we had been in the past (where we had a hotel-special Fast Pass/ Priority Viewing ticket), but it was still pretty crowded. The lamp posts were in the way and we still had to lift the younger boys up on our shoulder so they could see. I wasn’t expecting to be treated like a Rock Star because of the Dining Package, but I was disappointed that we didn’t get a better viewing location. I guess like all other Disney experiences, you still have to get there early to stake out the best seats against the other preferred viewing guests.
Overall, the restaurant and the preferred viewing section were only average, especially considering the price tag that we paid for the experience.
