The spicy ramen with rice cake and cheese from Myung Dong Tofu Cabin in San Mateo, just off the 101/Hillsdale exit in the Marina Shopping Center.
My head is perspiring as I think about writing this review.
When I spotted this item under the House Special section of their menu, I was intrigued but not fully committed to giving it a try. But with some encouragement, I ordered it for lunch and it was pretty darn tasty. And I was stuffed – but that’s expected whenever you order a dish that’s full of the rice cake logs, as this one was.
The ramen looks and tastes like the Shun Ramen that you buy from any Asian grocery store, but served without the soup base. There was plenty of sauce from the Gochujang, plus chopped jalapenos and green peppers mixed in. And the mozzarella cheese does a surprisingly good job of tying everything in… the gooey melted cheese blended well with the rice cake and the ramen but it doesn’t really add much flavor to the dish, since the rest of it is so spicy.
Although it was a good dish, I probably wouldn’t order it again because I typically don’t go to Korean restaurants to try new dishes – I go to satisfy my soon tofu chigae, my dolsot bi bim bap, my chap chae, and my kalbi cravings.
